About Me
Hello world! This is Joanna (Zhuolin Ouyang). I am currently a second year graduate student at USC’s Business Analytics program, a Data Analyst Intern at City of Los Angeles, and is about to graduate in May 2019. I am a fast learner and a detail-oriented data analyst who is keen on using analytical skills and business expertise to help enterprises interpret available data, identify opportunities and improve business performance. I am currently actively searching for 2019 full-time positions related to data analytics.
I am experienced in the following aspects:
- Data mining: R, Python, Advanced Excel
- Visualization: Tableau, PowerBI
- Databases: MySQL, SQL Server
- A/B Testing: Desigining KPIs, Performance Evaluation
- Machine Learning: Clustering, Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Time Series Analysis, Random Forest
My Projects
During my study at USC, I have participated in several interesting and rewarding projects. Following are some of the highlights among them:
- Fraud Detection Machine Learning Projects
- Data Mining Projects
- Data Visualization Projects
#MakeoverMonday
MakeoverMonday is a project that I am currently working on during my spare time. It is a social data project which “offers inspiration and a dose of perspective for those who communicate data, and allow people to explore different perspectives and approaches to create more effective visualizations.”
To be more specific, “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Inspired by Dong Yu (an amazing data analyst also graduated from USC), I started this project from January 2019 and hope to better understand how to interpret data and translate insights into impactful visualizations. I plan to use Tableau for visualizations. Wish me luck!
I’ve listed my vizzes below to track my weekly progress. All my Tableau visualizations can be found here through my Teableau Public profile.

My Notes
I am a curious learner who is constantly trying to evolve to the next stage. Since my first entry to the data world, I have been constantly learning new techniques and knowledge that are fundamental to my future career. I like to use notes to record my progress so that I can always refer back and reflect on previous thoughts to generate more new ideas for future tasks.
Course Notes
So far, I have taken courses from various sources to sharpen my technical skills or business understanding in different aspects.
- Data Manipulation:
- Datacamp: Data Scientist with R and Data Scientist with Python
- Mode: Advanced SQL (data wrangling, window function)
- A/B Testing: Udacity. A beginner course on A/B testing, and is really helpful for students who have no actual experience of doing A/B testing to have a overall understanding of the relevant specifics.
You can find the full list of my course notes here.
Some of the notes were written in Chinese at my convenience (since my native language is Chinese), but the code are all readily provided, so I think language will not be a big issue here.
Reading Notes
- Lean Analytics: This is a book that I am currently reading to deepen my understanding of the actual application of analytics in real business setting. The book covered some of the most important concept in data science that has fundamental impact on decision making process.
I will continue to record my learning process on my website.
Feel free to join my journey or explore my website! Fight On!
